January 2022 marked my 30-year anniversary in the London Insurance Market and it was a milestone that made me pause and reflect upon my career to date. I am incredibly passionate about the insurance industry but, as proud as I am to be part of its community, I can also recognise that there is still so much more to do when it comes to diversity and inclusion, with age diversity being a major, but perhaps less spoken about aspect of that. In my 20’s and 30’s, I had a feeling of discomfort walking across the Lloyd’s underwriting room where I worked at the time, largely because I couldn’t physically see many other women in the room; I could not see enough female role models.
There is not one part of me that regrets taking that first step in helping to drive change.
As I began to climb the ladder and gain confidence, it occurred to me that perhaps I could fill that role myself, and that is why I stepped up to become a founding member of Inclusion@Lloyd’s. There is not one part of me that regrets taking that first step in helping to drive change. We still have a way to go but I will continue to contribute to this important agenda, because I want this industry to become an inclusive place for everyone. I may be 51 but I’m not done yet!
