Pauline White | Zurich
I started in the industry 40 years ago, straight out of school, staying with Aviva for 26 years. I had two children while there and was one of the first employees to come back part-time after maternity leave. It is something we take for granted now, but shows you should never stop lobbying for change. It was something my predecessors had fought for.
When I left Aviva, aged 48, I wanted to prove to myself there was life after a long career at one company and so I moved to Zurich. A welcome surprise was that my age was never mentioned, it was my experience that was welcomed.
If you need help just ask, and you can help others in return. We achieve more when we work together!
My favourite career moments include helping other women realise their true potential through mentoring and leading the women’s network. I campaigned for a menopause policy at Zurich and this year it was finally realised. I was extremely proud to be nominated for Mentor of the Year in the Women in Insurance awards in 2021. My work with Zurich’s women’s network allows me to meet fantastic colleagues and to learn new things.
My advice to those starting out: be bold and have confidence in yourself. If you need help just ask, and you can help others in return. We achieve more when we work together!
